Did Maple Leafs' Mitch Marner let something slip about his contract negotiations?

It’s clearly going to be hard to get anything out of Mitch Marner about his current contract negotiations.

The Maple Leafs forward, who is a restricted free agent, spoke with TSN about his situation Thursday, but he wasn’t giving much away.

“I haven’t paid attention at all,” he said in reference to rumors surrounding his contract negotiation. “It’s been a great summer so far, it’s been relaxing, it’s been fun and (I’m) excited to get back on the ice.”

Marner, 22, continues to wait for either a deal or for another team to at least put in an offer sheet on him.

Offer sheets aren’t incredibly common, though Hurricanes forward Sebastian Aho did get one from the Canadiens earlier this offseason. Carolina matched it, which locked him up long term.

As for Marner, he kept his negotiations very close to the vest, but it did appear like he gave a little away at one point. TSN said to Marner: “So basically, nothing imminent?” and Marner opened up a touch, even if it was by accident.

“Yep,” he said, but then quickly went back to keeping his thoughts close to the vest. “I don’t know, you’ve got to ask my agent, he’s the one you’ve got to go to.”

The Maple Leafs finished last season 46-28-8 and lost to the Bruins in seven games during the first round of the playoffs.

Marner had 26 goals and 68 assists while averaging 19:49 in ice time.

According to Cap Friendly, the Maple Leafs have a little more than $3 million in cap room. Many have projected Marner to receive a deal in the $10 million range in average annual value.
